Unit 5: Integration 1 - Tech, L.A., Social Studies
I adapted these lesson plans from Architecture of Natural Materials by Nava Beja. The whole unit is available below.
Lesson 1, 2 and 3:
This lesson requires students to consider habitats and create on for a small clay figurine using found materials including either nature or manmade, or a mixture of the two. After consideration of different animal habitats and homes around the world (social units), students will create a small shelter or a larger home/environment for this particular figurine. Students are to consider the stability of the structure, aesthetics, and reasoning behind their choices incorporating ideas from their studies of animals and cultural habitats.

I chose to include the following unit on Picture Books and Illustrations as I am a picture book addict! I love the idea of incorporating art into a unit study on a particular book, and like the fact that this unit is geared towards younger grades. I also believe that this unit could be used with older grades in such picture books as Shaun Tan or perhaps with graphic novels. I like the diversification within a classroom that is possible when using picture books also, as the necessity to read at a higher level is eliminated.
