Unit 2: Comics/Animation
I adapted these lesson plans from Art 10 - Animation and Technology by Daphne Carassco. The whole unit is available below.
Lesson 1 and 2:
After reviewing some examples of frame by frame animation, students will create their own flip book using what they have learned about frame by frame animating. Students are free to create flip book images of simple shapes or develop more complex pictures while taking into account the idea of motion through each frame. Students will record themselves flipping through the images (flip book) or photograph each image individually. If photographing the images, these images will be uploaded into PowerPoint and played back as a slide-show type flip book. See file below 'A Flower's Life' as an exemplar.

Lesson 3:
Students will be introduced to the concept of 'stop-motion films'. After reviewing examples of such films, students will be assigned a stop-motion project of their own. They will be allowed freedom in choice of characters and setting. PicPac will be introduced as an app which allows a film to be created out of a series of images (PowerPoint may also be used). Students will play with timing, variation in amounts of changes from image to image, inserting sounds, as well as noting how many photographs need to be taken in order to create a film that is approximately 10 seconds in length.

I chose to include the following unit on Cartooning in my portfolio as well as I feel it would prove to be an entertaining unit to do with older students. This type of unit could also be integrated into a variety of subjects, for example, students are to create a cartoon based on a scientific concept that we are studying at the moment. I also like that this type of art can be adapted to suit each students abilities. It is not as much about the perfection of each drawing, but about the imagination and ideas that are portrayed through the cartoons.
